Are you a novelist, or any writer for that matter, who is struggling to overcome writer’s block?

Think about all the frustration and even despair that writer’s block causes.Writer’s block erodes your confidence and causes you to be frustrated and grumpy.

man-416473_1280

But, what if you had the tools you need to focus your thoughts and use your mind so that you could effectively daydream your way out of writer’s block?

What if you understood just what writer’s block is and how the human mind is designed to work? And what if you could use this knowledge to overcome writer’s block every time it raised its ugly head?

That Would Be Something Worth Knowing, Wouldn’t It?

Well, imagine receiving the answers to the questions you’re asking and getting on with your writing rather than being filled with doubt about your ability and being grumpy with everyone in your life.

Now imagine the confidence in your ability and the peace of mind you’d have if you knew, with 100% certainty, that the answers were just a day dream away.

What would life be like if all thUdemy-writers-blockat changed? How much better would it be? How much more productive would you be and how much happier a place would your life be?

And, most importantly, what would that peace of mind and confidence be worth to you, or your loved ones for that matter?

Like I said. I know, I’ve been there before and that’s why I created How To Day Dream Your Way Out Of Writer’s Block: A Step By Step Guide For Novelists To Jump start Your Creativity.

In this short and to the point course you’ll learn what writer’s block really is and what causes it. Because if you don’t know who the enemy is you don’t know who to fight.

I’m Of Two, No Three, Minds On This

Then you’ll learn exactly how the human mind works and how to use it more effectively. Did you know you actually have three minds and two types of imagination?

You’ll learn techniques to consciously focus your thoughts and then, once you have all the pieces of the puzzle, you’ll learn how to put them all together and effectively daydream the solutions to your problems the same way geniuses like Beethoven, Edison and Einstein did.

beethoven-787694_1280

So get rid of those nagging feelings of doubt and frustration that are causing so much trouble in your life. Stop struggling with what to do next and how to do it and start achieving your goals and realizing your dream.

Just What Causes Writer’s Block Anyway?

You’ll learn just what causes writer’s block in section 1 and what creativity is in section 2.

You’ll understand how your three different minds work and how different types of brain waves cause you to think differently in section 3.

Then you’ll put all the pieces of the puzzle together in section 4 by consciously organizing your thoughts and externalizing your thinking.

And finally, in section 5, you’ll discover how to change your level of consciousness and effectively day dream your way out of writer’s block.

But, because some people don’t have time to sit through a course, no matter how short it is, you’ll find an audio version so you can listen to it on the go in the bonus materials section where you’ll also get a PDF version of the course with transcripts and links to external resources for a deeper understanding of how your mind works.

writersblockPDFcover_778x526

And, because you’re a visitor of e-novel-advisor.com when you take the course you will get a significant discount on the price and if you are not completely satisfied you have a 30 day money back guarantee. Just return it, no questions asked.

So stop wasting your time on the road to nowhere. Get back to writing with confidence and certainty. Take control of the writing process rather than writer’s block controlling you and preventing you from living your dream. Are you ready? OK, then let’s get started now.

The power of myth lies in its ability to translate the energy of our untapped human potential that exists in our subconscious minds into our fully realized potential so that we are able to live the lives we deserve to.

Wow, that’s a mouthful.

And yes, this does sound like some mumbo jumbo, psycho babble so let me rephrase it. Because it’s important…more important than you can realize right now.

prometheus-646793_1920

If you’ve taken my course on overcoming writer’s block you will know that human beings actually have three minds; the conscious, the unconscious and the super conscious or, as James Bonnet calls it in his book Stealing Fire From The Gods, the creative unconscious.

The conscious mind is very limited in its awareness and can only concentrate on seven, plus or minus two, bits of information at a time. This is why we hyphenate phone numbers in order to remember them.

But, at the level of your unconscious mind we all possess a vast, unrealized potential.

Now, the creative unconscious is also referred to as the collective unconscious because it is the warehouse of everything everybody has ever known.

This is the universal mind which includes Shakespeare, Einstein, Newton, Jesus, Buddha, Bob the janitor and everyone else. So it’s a pretty rich storehouse of information.

And, we can all access it.

But How?

Well, in his book Bonnet explains how the power of myth, through the stories we tell, does just that.

You see, stories are actually devices, engines even, for translating all the psychological issues we have at our subconscious level (the bully in 3rd grade said you had a big nose) into something much better for ourselves (“yeah, big noses are awesome that’s why people soul-746560_1920love me and consider me a hero”).

This is the power of myth as revealed in all the great stories of history: The Iliad, The Odyssey, the stories of The Bible and all the other great religious traditions of the world.

These stories, because of the way they are structured, speak to us on a subconscious level without us even knowing it and help us to realize our true potential.

Ouch!

But, the important thing to understand is that, as we moved from the oral tradition to the written word, the power of myth to transform us through stories, was castrated. Yes, the stories of today have, for the most part, literally become cut off from the power of stories from a previous age.

Bonnet explains that, even when modern stories employ just one or two of the elements of the great stories of old, they go on to be bestsellers. Star Wars and Titanic are just two examples of stories that have employed some of the techniques, and reclaimed the former power of the old, great stories.

The Secret Lies In The Hero’s Journey

volkswagen-569315_1920You see, it has to do with the idea of the hero’s journey, a journey that each of us faces thousands of times in our lives.

The hero moves from a location of comfort and understanding (which represents the conscious mind) to a destination of fear and chaos (unconscious mind) where the hero must dig deep within himself or herself to win the prize (his/her unrealized potential) which he then brings home (he consciously realizes his potential).

The Power Of Myth Is Irresistible To Readerread-369040_1280s

This is the power of myth to create lasting change in your readers and this is why stories that employ these techniques are so popular and have such lasting power.

They are virtually irresistible to readers.

Think about The Wizard of Oz, think about Rocky, think about any well known and popular story and you will find the fundamental elements of the hero’s journey.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg and this is a pretty big topic so, if you’d like to learn how to use the power of myth to write stories that are irresistible, I highly recommend reading Stealing Fire From The Gods as well as The Writer’s Journey: Mythic Structures For Writers by Christopher Vogler.

sand-768783_1920A character arc is related to the plot line of a story in that it effects and is effected by the plot. But it portrays the journey the character is taking inside his head as opposed to the one he is taking in the outside world.

A character arc is only going to exist in a certain type of story so before we talk any more about it let’s take a look at two different types of stories.

Plot Driven vs. Character Driven Stories

In plot driven fiction the events of the plot move the story forward and cause the characters to react. The characters take a back seat to the plot as they are effected by and react to the external world.

These types of stories are very common: Just think of writers like Tom Clancy, Stephen King and James Patterson. The characters don’t do a lot of contemplating their navels when there are bullets to avoid, mysteries to be solved and monsters about.

Character driven fiction is another beast completely.

In this type of story the character is the prime mover and moves the plot along through the decisions and choices they make along the way. This type of story is much more nuanced and, consequently, harder to write.

But, this type of story can also be much more insightful and truer to life than a plot driven story.

So, How Do I Create A Character Arc?geography-42608_1280

While plots can be fairly easy to design, the story has to go though point B before it gets from point A to point C, it gets more complicated when you involve the thoughts of the character.

In a thriller or mystery the character is compelled by the events of the plot to take action.

However, in a character driven story the discovery of a dead body might cause the main character to think about the events of his childhood before he even thinks about looking for the murderer, if he even does.

So, in this type of fiction you must take into consideration the character’s internal motivation for doing things before he acts in the external world or reacts to the events of that world.

It’s A Bit Of A Literary Dance

As the plot and the character arc play off each other they may change over time.

You may start writing your story with one plot in mind and find that, tango-108483_1280as your writing it, the character has changed his mind and wants to tell a different story.

This can be frustrating to say the least.

In order to keep these two dance partners dancing to the same tune you need to be keep some other things in mind.

Follow These Sign Posts To Get You To Where You Want To Go

If you’re having difficulty meshing the plot and the character arc step back and think about a few things first.

What kind of story are you writing?

Is it a romance novel?

If so, then the story needs to follow that general direction and it can’t devolve into something else.

Is it a western, an adventure story, a murder mystery?

Then let the expectations of the reader reading those genres help point you in the right direction.

Where does the conflict of the story lie?

There are 6 types of conflict.

Is it a conflict between the main character and himself or the main character and society as a whole? This will help you find your way too. For more on conflict click here.

What is the intended outcome of the story?sign-1064493_1280

Are you going to Albuquerque or Dublin? These are two completely different destinations and two completely different journeys.

To help guide you along the way you need to know your dramatic throughline. Does the character succeed, fail, give up?

These are simple questions but easily forgotten with everything else you have to do in your story. To understand the importance of the dramatic throughline click here.

Metafiction is fiction in which the author consciously intrudes on the work of fiction and draws attention to himself and the fact that what you are reading is a work of art, artifice, and is, therefore…you guessed it, artificial.

Examples Of Metafiction

Metafiction has a long history and appears in works as old as Don Quixote and Henry Fielding’s The History Of Tom Jones.

Some more contemporary examples include Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude which makes use of metafiction in a number of ways such as Gabriel García Márquez himself  face-417825_1920appearing as a character in the novel.

The novel, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, by Italo Calvino starts out with the sentence “You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino’s new novel, If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler”. Obviously informing the reader that he is reading a metafictional or self referential work.

The narrator introduces himself and says he’s involved in a plot that he doesn’t understand and, just as things get interesting, the story is derailed due to an error with the book’s printing.

The story, not that story but a new story, continues with you, the reader, returning to the bookstore where you bought it.

As the novel progresses one story cuts off abruptly and becomes another story until you, the reader, go to the book’s publisher demanding an explanation.

Fun stuff.

Well, Why Would You Use Metafiction?question-mark-1019983_1920

Good question.

In a nutshell, because you want to draw attention to the nature of reality.

For example, you might mention that reality is stranger than fiction and that, if you were characters in a book, no one would believe you in a conversation with friends. This is a common enough occurrence and I’m sure you’ve had this type of conversation before.

However, if a character in a novel makes mention of this, it takes on a whole other dimension as now the characters know they are characters in a novel. What does this say about us and our reality?

Well, it really depends on the writer and the story he wants to tell.

Schrödinger’s Cat

Schrödinger’s Cat is the name of a very famous thought experiment by the physicist Erwin Schrödinger. In it a cat is imagined as being enclosed in a box and, depending on the circumstances of the experiment, the cat is either dead or alive.

I won’t bore you with the details but, if you don’t believe me, Erwin Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize. So take your complaints up with the folks in Sweden.

For the sake of our conversation though, the experiment suggests the possibility of alternative realities and parallel universes.shield-492996_1920

In Robert Anton Wilson’s Novel Schrödinger’s Cat he uses this concept to talk about a society similar to ours. Here the Alpha males of the society are referred to as Alpha males(rather than generals, politicians etc).

They are portrayed performing their social duties as Alpha males of the pack rather than generals, politicians and other titles that our reality gives to the Alpha males of the pack.

In this way we are able to see our reality in a whole new light. It is a way that just telling a story traditionally would not have allowed us to.

So use this technique when you want to question the very nature of this thing we call reality, just like a fish might use it to question a substance called water that may or may not exist.

The hero’s journey is something that was first revealed to the world by mythologist Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces.

In this book he revealed that all the myths of the world share some common elements; a pattern that he referred to as the Monomyth. You see, in all of the great stories of antiquity, the story follows a number of stages that came to be referred to as the hero’s journey.

So What Is This Hero’s Journey?

In his book The Writer’s Journey Christopher Vogler breaks down and elaborates the stages and other elements of the journey.

Stage 1: The Ordinary Worldworld-549425_1920 We see the hero in his typical surroundings.

Stage 2: The Call to Adventure Something happens to cause the hero to act.

rocket-970_1920

Stage 3: The Refusal of the Call The hero hesitates.

Stage 4: The Meeting with the Mentor The hero meets a mentor who councils the hero.

Stage 5: Crossing the First Threshold The adventure begins!

Stage 6: Tests, Allies and Enemies The hero meets allies who help him, enemies who oppose him and tests he must pass.

Stage 7: The Approach to the Inmost Cave The hero must dig deep, face his fears and find his courage.

Stage 8: The Ordealmoon-landing-60582_1920 The hero faces the greatest challenge of all, death.

Stage 9: The Reward (Seizing the Sword) The hero gets what he came for.

Stage 10: The Road Back The game is over, time to go home.

Stage 11: The Resurrection The hero becomes more than he once was.

Stage 12 The Return with the Elixir

The hero returns to his ordinary world a changed man or woman and the experience he brings is a benefit to thosspace-shuttle-879561_1280e who have not made the journey.

So Why Is This Journey So Important?

There are a lot of variables that shape each of the stages of the journey and there is a lot of flexibility for the writer to shape a story around those stages. But, essentially, the journey of the hero is the journey that each and every one of us faces from the day we are born to the day we die.

It is the story of our lives.

So it speaks to us on a subconscious level.

But, here’s something even more important.

In his book, Stealing Fire From The Gods, James Bonnet reveals that all the old myths and great stories of history share some other important qualities that are missing in the stories of today.

You see these myths of antiquity served as metaphors for psychological processes that we undergo throughout our lives to become mature human beings. Stories, or The Great Stories as Bonnet calls them, are devices that human beings use to understand the world and to live richer and more full lives.

This is why, when writer’s incorporate the hero’s journey and the other elements of the great stories of old, their stories are more likely to become bestsellers and classics.

As an example, the Star Wars saga follows the path of the hero’s journey, just as does The Wizard of Oz and Titanic. The reason these stories were so successful is because they incorporated these mythic elements and spoke to readers like they were giving us water in the desert.

Choosing the right plot structure is essential to a telling the story you want to tell.chalkboard-620316_1920 It’s like choosing the right metaphor because plot structure is the hanger you hang your story on.

Wait, no.

It’s the skeleton that shapes the flesh of your story so that people can see who and what your story is.

You see what I just did there?

If you don’t choose the right word people will not know what you’re talking about.

If you don’t choose the right metaphor people will not understand the concept you are trying to convey.

If you don’t choose the right plot structure people will not understand the message of the story you are trying to tell.

Now, structure is something that you will have to play around with as you write your novel. There will probably be a good deal of trial and error before you get things just the way they need to be.

But, there are a number of standard plot structures for telling different types of stories, and here are 11 of them.

  1. The Roller Coaster

This plot structure is plot dthe-roller-coaster-526534_1280riven as opposed to character driven and is typical of action and suspense novels. Instead of having a major climax at the end of the novel there are a bunch of climaxes throughout the plot that build toward the end.

Think of Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.

  1. The Replay

In this structure the same story is told over and over again from different points of view or so that we see how different actions might have resulted in a different conclusion.

Think Rashomon or Groundhog Day.

people-1082902_1280

  1. Fate

In this structure the climax comes at the beginning of the story as well as the end. We first see the effect and then we see the causes that led up to it.

Think Double Indemnity and Forrest Gump.

  1. The Parallel Structure

This is a story with two or more plots that run parallel to each other and reflect upon each other.

Think The Lord of the Rings.

  1. The Episodic

This structure is a series of stories linked together by similar characters, themes, locations etc.

Read Orlando by Virginia Woolf

  1. The Melodrama

This structure focuses on relationships and family.graffiti-1088873_1280

The female melodrama focuses on tragedy and focuses on the main character as a victim and the family issues are left are unresolved at the end.

Watch All That Heaven Allows.

The issues in the male version of the melodrama are reconciled at the end.

Watch Rebel Without a Cause by Nicholas Ray.

  1. The Romance

This structure focuses on two main characters who fall in love. ‘Nuff said.

Read Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice.

  1. The Journey

In this structure a main character sets off on an adventure and grows emotionally.

The movies Titanic and Three Kings are versions of this.

  1. The Interactive

It’s hard to define this structure because the reader must participate in its construction and can change the flow of the narrative.

Read Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar.

  1. Metafiction

salvador-dali-graffiti-741154_1920This is a self referential structure in which the author draws attention to the fact that he is writing the story as you are reading it.

Read If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

11. The Slice of Life

These stories are very stream of consciousness and are character oriented. It rejects the traditional three act structure.

Read Anton Chekhov’s An Upheaval as an example.

So there you have it, eleven plot structure techniques that help to shape the story you want to tell. Obviously some are better suited for some stories than are others. And, obviously, there’s a lot more to discuss about each one.

For more information you will want to read Victoria Lynn Schmidt’s great book Story Structure Architect.

Sangst-802639_1920elf doubt can prevent you from living the life of your dreams. It is a major problem in the lives of millions, if not billions of people and it can kill a writing career before it even begins.

I know. I’ve struggled with it throughout my life and it still raises its ugly head occasionally. But, not that much anymore, and I’d like to share some insights with you.

Perhaps they’ll help.

As a writer I have spent the majority of my life investigating how Human Beings work, how they communicate, how they think, why they act like, what they do etc., etc., etc. I’ve read widely in the world’s great religions and philosophies, I’ve studied psychology, mythology, languages, quantum physics and blah, blah, blah.

You get the picture.

So, here is the one thing I’ve discovered…

The World Is As You Believe It To Beunknown-913568_1920

Don’t believe me?

Well, let me ask you. How’s the weather outside? Is it good or bad? Surely, you have an opinion.

OK, I’ll tell you how the weather is outside your house without even being there. The weather just is. It is neither good or bad until you decide what it is.

So what? Big deal.

Well, it actually is a big deal. It’s the biggest deal in the world because this means that your life and the events in it have no meaning until you give it to them. The weather isn’t good or bad until you command it to be. This is because, whether you realize it yet or not, you are the most powerful person in your reality.

There Is No Good Or Bad, But Thinking Makes It So

So what does this have to do with overcoming self doubt? Well, hang on and I’ll get there. It’s not like you have anything better to do anyway, I mean you’re busy being paralyzed by self doubt, aren’t you?

You see your experience of the world and my experience of the world each passes through the filters of our senses and our thoughts and beliefs. This means that you and I can experience the same event but have two completely different experiences of it because we have applied different meanings to it.

Your Experience Of Reality Can Never Be Reality Itself

Would you go to a restaurant and start eating the menu? No. This is because you know that the menu is just a representation of the meal just as your thoughts are a representation of reality…but not reality itself.

You know what this means???

It means….

Self Doubt Is A Prison Of Your Own Makingprison-162885_1280

Your self doubt is just an opinion and opinions are, quite literally, make believe. It’s just something you made up in your mind. It is not something that is set in stone for the ages to behold. Your self doubt is simply an opinion and opinions can be changed.

So why are you doubting yourself?

There are probably a number of reasons you don’t think you’re a good writer or can even write at all. But they are all reasons that you, and you alone, give power to.

Moment Of Zen

Before I finish let me pose you a question.

If it’s raining outside is the weather good or bad? To the child who wants to play it is bad. To the farmer who wants to make a living it is good.

doubt-479567_1920Right now you are calling the reasons you’re doubting yourself good reasons. You need to change your mind, change your perspective, and call them bad reasons so you can start overcoming them.

Now, obviously we’re not going to solve your problems in the space of a single article. But, now that you are conscious of the problem you can work to overcome it.

In my experience, one of the best ways to overcome your problems is by having a group of supportive, like minded people with whom to share them.

This is what e-novel-advisor is. It’s not just a place to learn about writing, publishing and marketing your books. It’s more than that.

It’s a place to share your writing with others and get constructive criticism. It is a place to pose questions about which direction your story should take next. It’s a place to find friends from all over the world who are going through the same things you are; who have the same doubts you have.

So come join us on the forums. Ask a question. Give an answer. Find a friend. Overcome your problems and become the writer you were born to be.start-1093914_1920

Remember it was Shakespeare who said “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”

Looking for a free editor application to help professionally format your book? Then check out the new app from Reedsy.

Not familiar with Reedsy? Well, if you’re a writer, especially an Indie writer, you should be.

Reedsy is a company that provides all the services a publishing company would but to Indie writers. The website is very easy to use and writers can choose from a talent pool of 200 editors, copy editors and cover illustrators who were selected from a list of over 2,000 applicants. Reedsy is highly selective and only provides the best for their writers, some of their free lancers even worked on New York Times best sellers. So it makes sense that they are an affiliate of ours.

With the free editor application that they have just rolled out you can publish a professionally designed book that’s instantly available for both physical and digital distribution.

The free editor app is a tool that takes care of the formatting and conversion even before you finish writing. With this application you can export ePub files for uploading to ebookstores, or typeset print-ready PDF files that can be sent instantly to print-on-demand services.

So What Is This Free Editor App?

Well, it took thousands of hours, and countless iterations on design and code to create, so let’s take a look at it.

To format a book, authors will only be using our style-guide toolbar. Here is what it looks like:
